The end of an era.....

Just thought I'd update you all on the Cemetery Chapel which as many of you knew was faced with demolition. Sadly, today was the day and the Chapel stands no more.

A lovely shot by Susan Jaleel.
This was taken just two weeks ago and is probably one of the last photographs of the chapel before its demolition.

I'm Gutted Nancy
I am shocked it was not sold to a demolition company who would have stripped it and recycled the stone, slates, doors, windows, and anything else that was saleable... never expected it to be a pile of rubble... sad site in deed.

I am also gutted. A fortnight ago, 17 February, I visited Hyde and went on a long nostalgic walk which took in the cemetery. To my surprise and delight, the chapel was still standing and I foolishly presumed it had been reprieved. Poignantly, someone had placed a spray of flowers on the chapel steps - possibly robbed from a grave but that didn't matter. Now it's all reduced to a pile of rubble and it's a shame. It also strikes me as odd that a bus shelter in the town centre can be given Grade 2 listing whilst a building as attractive as this does not. Still, my thanks to TMBC for delaying the demolition until after my visit.

That is terrible. I used to live at 5 Sykes Street, right next to the Cemetery Wall and used walk with my grandad past that Chapel all the time. I am very Sad!

Sad but inevitable I suppose. They said that the Metropolitan Police was institutionally racist, so I suppose the way this has just been reduced to a pile if rubble shows that Tameside Council is institutionally vandalistic.
I went and took a few photos when all this started kicking off last year, and I'll email them to you Nancy.

what a shame as i have said before i used to have to light the coke boiler in this chapel when there was a funeral hen i worked at the cemetery as a gardener in the 80s it was a lovely building
the council dont care about any of their buildings why dont they start by knocking down their dustbin council offices

It beggars belief that Tameside Council would demolish this type of building in Hyde, yet they allowed the construction of Asda, Fine Fare, multi storey car park type buildings. Oh, and don’t forget Chartist & John Grundy House for architectural magnificence. What is wrong with these people?

I must apologise Nancy as I did mean to get on board with your petition…..but unfortunately, procrastination got in the way like it always does with me.

Maybe, just maybe, if enough people cared and raised their voices, then these idiots who hold office might just listen. Then again…..maybe not.

I was also alarmed that they didn’t even give the building the courtesy of being recycled. All that material is probably going to landfill. Just like adding insult to injury really.

When I think of Hyde, I think of Victorian Hyde….the beautiful town hall, the library and those other buildings, and I think of the men and women who dreamt of them, who probably wanted to leave something beautiful and meaningful for future generations of Hydonians.

I then cast my mind back to the modern 60’s planning that saw all those square concrete offices around the mall, the good old multi storey car park / toilet, the inspired concrete waste disposal unit / fountain in market square. I can almost see the council meeting….” Let’s tear down Hyde Lads Club; it will make a great piece of vacant land in the centre of Hyde. Just what we need. Motion passed".

Can you imagine the planning morons having a Foundation Stone Ceremony for the start of the building of the car park?? Where would you put a foundation stone on that monstrosity?? Who in their right mind would want to put their name to that anyway???

The residents of Hyde were given a perfectly good town with beautiful buildings and civic pride, then the Tameside morons got hold of it, adopted turd brown as our council colour, (whose inspired idea was THAT???) then they built that Colditz style joke of a pile in Ashton to house themselves. What chance does the place have really.

Anyhow, probably a bit of a diatribe, but there you go. Well done Nancy for at least having the passion to give a damn about that fine old building. And shame on Tameside council for once again destroying something beautiful in the midst of an urban oasis and leaving yet another empty wasted space where someones dream and passion once stood.

Dave has very kindly sent me some photos of the Chapel before its demolition which I will post in the near future. It will be nice to have a record of its beauty.
Thanks Dave :)

It is such a shame that the chapel was torn down, but what is strange is, back in 2003 I wrote a short story called 'The Cemetery' and in it, the chapel is due for demolition. The story is based in Hyde cemetery. Sad sight to see it a pile of rubble in reality, though.
