Red Lion on the Left.... looking down Stockport Road... I came across reference to this area being once known as Treacle Hill... I know Treacle Brow run from Stockport Road to Mottram Old Road by the side of the Werneth.. but would be very interested in hearing anything else about this area.. names, shops, and such like.
Another view of Stockport Road and Mottran Old Road

And doesn't it look peaceful. In the 2nd pic, Mottram Old Rd looks like a narrow country lane!
I really love seeing these old photos from bygone days♥
I lived in the nearest of the two stone cottages in the background of the top picture. Until about 1970/71 the furthest cottage served as a haberdashery store owned by Mrs Hilda Orpet and her sister, Mrs Beatrice Lowe. The house alongside the tram is 226 Stockport Road, the home today of Mr Brian Orpet and the shop next door to it was the Co-op - butchery on one side and grocery on the other. The house next to that was, in the 50s/early 60s, the home of Alf & Maggie Bright. Alf was well-known as the road sweeper in Gee Cross. Where the Red Lion stood there is now a grassed area. This stretch of road from the junction with Mottram Old Road to the Werneth was known as Acorn Hill.
Werneth Low.. Great name ;o)
Thank you very much for this information... just the kind of thing we need to add to the postings we do... please feel free to add anything at any time.. thank you again.
Pretty sure just slighty further up from the Werneth Pub stands 'Acorn House'.
Acorn House is 226 Stockport Road - the home of Mr Brian Orpet [details above]
I'll see if we can come up with some more from around here...
I was so interested to see the old photos of Stockport Road/Mottram Old Road - they brought back memories of when I was evacuated to Gee Cross in 1944 from Cheam in Surrey. I was 12 years old and lived with Mr. Harold Lowe and his wife Beatrice in Baron Road. Beatrice's sister Hilda lived at 226 Stockport Road with her husband Horace Orpet and children Eileen and Brian. Granddad also lived with them. I went to Hyde County School and used to call in at the shop on my way home. "Auntie" Beatie and "Auntie" Hilda used to take me sometimes to the warehouses in Manchester to choose clothes for their customers. I have such happy memories of them all and became great friends with Eileen. They were all such lovely people and made me feel at home with them.
Further to my memories of being an evacuee in Gee-Cross in 1944 I don't suppose there is anyone around who might remember me !!! ...apart from Brian Orpet who was 10 years younger than me, so I think I might try and contact him. I just love all your old photos.
Hello there Anon.. I have only just seen your comments and find them fascinating... you asked if there was anyone one who might recall you.. I would love to do a post about your memories of Hyde and how you came to live here.. maybe if you have an old photo of yourself an one from now it would be very much appreciated. Hello - at the moment I'm gathering together all my memories of being an evacuee in Gee Cross for my 8 year old GREAT/granddaughter who is showing an interest in it all. It hardly seems possible that I was only a few years older than she is now ! I don't think I've got any photos from that time but I'll have a good look to check. I loved my time in Gee Cross and made many friends. We used to walk up Joel Lane after Sunday school, over Werneth Low and back down Baron Road - also go for walks in Pole Bank. My grandmother and grandfather also came for a while and lodged with a Mr.Figg further along the village. Although I came home to Cheam in 1945 I used to come up to Gee Cross in the school holidays to visit "Auntie" Beatie and "Uncle" Harold and catch-up with my special friend Eileen Orpet.
Hello again.. I hope someone from Gee Cross who happen to read this recalls you or knows the folk you mention.. if would be great if we could put you in touch with past friends.
