Douglas Street
A modern Map showing the Douglas Street area.
Queen Street looking over to the Douglas street site of James North. The wall to the Recreation Ground (Rec) borders the grass verge. This wall still stands and separates the new Greenfield Primary school from the Rec.
Douglas Street after the demolition of James North and Sons. The lamp to the right is on the corner of Douglas Street and Queen Street. The photo is taken from behind the fencing of the Recreation Ground or "The Rec" as it is more commonly known..
This shows the new housing estate that was built on the derelict land - a vast improvement ,I think.

I do like the second picture Nancy... I always liked walking under that bridge.. I recall it was always dusty.
Just done a post about the ex-Queen street end of what is now Douglas Street and linked back here - Douglas Street ex Queen Street.
I notice on the map that Tower Street is labelled as crossing Market Street into what is surely Vernon Street.
Well spotted ,Gerald! It is indeed Vernon Street !
I like the photo of what was the other end of Queen street on your blog.:)
The houses look like boxes. Do homes in England not have verandahs then? Most homes here do.
In the 1960's the building opposite the James North building on the corner of Douglas Street was a slipper factory run by a Jack Whittle
