The name "HYDE" is derived from the hide, a measure of land for taxation purposes, taken to be that area of land necessary to support a peasant family. In later times it was taken to be equivalent to 120 acres .

ABC Lane further explained.
After reading the post the other day, CeeCee has sent us a description of ABC Lane which was written in The History of Hyde.
Very interesting reading and something I was unaware of.
Thanks CeeCee !! Much appreciated.

I often wondered about the name ABC lane. Thank you very much for enlightening me !
This is a new venture by two Hydonians Nancy and Tom, hopefully over time we will be joined by others who have pictures and stories to tell. Maybe you no longer live in Hyde.... or the UK and now and then feel a tad homesick.... well here's a place just for you to refresh memories, see long forgotten sights, and hear the odd name mentioned... Please feel free to contact us if there's anything you think we could help with concerning Hyde.
If you have any pictures, stories, memories, or items from or about Hyde and you would like to share them here with other like minded Hydonians please get in touch with us. Either leave us a comment or even better email us:
We are pleased to announce we have been joined by Paul... who is a local historian and published author, His work and knowledge as been quoted many times in past postings, and Paul as been helping us now for quite a while behind the scenes.
Dave Williams.
Research And Photographer
We are pleased to announce Dave has joined us on the team, he has been such a help with all his pictures. He is skilled in research and has a knack for getting 'just the right shot' with his camera skills.
Tom, Dave, Paul and I would like to say thank you to everyone for contributing to this blog in some small way - even if that means just reading it! It's been more of a success than we could ever have dreamt of and that's all down to you ! It was our intention to get Hyde "on the record" as it were and it seems to be heading in the right direction. We are very proud of Hyde and would like it's history to live on!

Can you help?
This blog is only as good as its content; luckily much of the older history of Hyde was covered by Thomas Middleton in his books The Annals Of Hyde and The History Of Hyde. These books have been invaluable for Nancy and me to fall back on. What we could do with now is pictures, from the 1900s onwards. There's a book or two from the First World War that have recently come to our notice… Hyde In War-Time… it was in two parts Part One covered 1914-1916... And we have been lucky enough to come across a copy of this and scan the whole book. We would love to be able to do the same with Part 2... So if there is a copy out there that we could scan please get in touch. WW11... Anything you know or have from that time and you think would come in useful would be greatly appreciated. Any pictures of bygone places, streets, works, shops, transport, farms, schools… cafes, pubs... the list goes on. Not just will all this be of use to making the blog more interesting... but will prove to be a great souce of material for anyone researching their family history.
