I'm lucky here because I can say I drank here quite a few times.... mostly in my dinner times from Throstle Bank Mill and UCD Dairies. I felt sad when I heard this pub had shut down, I think that was mid 1980's but please correct me on that if I'm wrong.
Hyde author Paul Taylor as a picture of this pub, in his book 'A History Of The Pubs Of Hyde And District' and covers it very well. I will not quote him word for word, if you want to see what Paul's wrote you'll need to buy a copy..... I'm pleased to say Harrisons News Agent at the bottom of Market Street still have copies for sale. What I will say is that this Pub opened around 1869..... and served and quenched the thirst of many a mill worker in its day. I was reminded of this pub as I had cause to visit the area this week... it is now a home to someone, what stories those walls must hold.

Talking of Throstle Bank Street - what is that thing that looks like a sundial on the corner of Dukinfield Road?
I think it's called 'Art' Gerald...
I thought from what you wrote and the comments in Paul Taylor's book that the building was still there, but when I went down there today I found a new building where the pub used to be. Photo on the way.
Well Dave... ha! In my memory the pub was across diagonally across from The Flower Field Hotel. I thought it was on the corner of Throstle Bank Street and Well Meadow... now saying all that, and knowing what my memory is like at time I may have to just check this... ;o)
My grandmother Florence Knowles was licensee of the Bank Cottage Inn.I believe that is her in the doorway. My father was James William Knowles and I remember traveling back to Hyde when she died,I was about eight so that would be about 1954..The pub is now a private home and if one uses Google earth is on the corner of Throstle st and Duckinfield rd you can stll make out the shape of the pub window under the stucco..I now live in Georgia USA and love reading this blog ,,if anyone could post more info I would be very grateful............Michael Knowles
